GF Hotels, a consolidated and diversified business group with a prosperous base of hotels on the island of Tenerife. A team of 1,000 employees spread across the different hotels and respective departments.
G Suite as part of the hotel strategy in the Canary Islands
Sun, sea and sand, the Canary Islands. The islands’ reputation as a top year-round tourist destination is world renown. Of course, behind the tourism is an enormous economic structure made up of the hospitality, restaurant and leisure industries, as well as much more besides…. Nonetheless, despite time seeming to stand still on the islands, these companies, just like any other, are undergoing a mandatory transition towards new technologies. Some allow themselves to be dragged along by crowd and others, like GF Hotels, have decided to step up and get ahead of the curve to put themselves at the forefront as the Cloud hotel group on the island.
GF Hotels is a Tenerife-based hotel chain established in 1971 that has long been adapting to the changes which have occurred over the years, all while championing a job well done, the value of people and ensuring that good results are produced by making the right decisions.
This business model is what has led the company to begin their digital transformation process, getting a jump on the competition and consolidating themselves as pioneers in the digital transformation of the hotel industry on the island using G Suite. They’ve unified work routines, streamlined processes and generally improved the daily lives of the group’s many employees.
The group, which has approximately 1,000 members of staff, decided to set out on its digital transition alongside GC-TIC and Nubalia, Google Cloud Partner, in order to devise a new risk-free strategy, thus beginning a long-term relationship which aimed to achieve a successful digital transformation across every hotel and department within the group.
“This digital transformation is aimed at improving internal relationships, streamlining processes and reducing time – these internal reforms will impact on the employees’ satisfaction and therefore on their work”. GF Hotels has undertaken an internal project which, despite not being overtly visible from the outside, is already producing results behind closed doors.
Cultural transformation the key
Of course, digital transformation is a slow process but the first step is training the ‘digitisers’, individuals who will drive the change so they can help the rest to embrace the G Suite tools. Often, there are significant mental barriers which hinder an understanding of the benefits offered by G Suite, its cloud tools and all the other advantages it brings. Proper training can remove those barriers in a very short space of time and that’s exactly what’s happening at GF HOTELS.
“We’re currently in the implementation process for those members of staff who don’t use IT systems in their work. We want to begin with people who are starting from scratch”. G Suite offers a vast range of possibilities, meaning a company’s digital transformation won’t follow a specific pattern. Starting the process with those individuals who have no barriers in the first place facilitates the implementation among the rest of the staff. So far, we’ve got 200 people using G Suite tools on their mobiles or tablets.
The G Suite apps are just as intuitive as desktop apps, easy to use, flexible and above all, secure. Giving those members of staff who don’t have their own workspace with a computer a digital identity fosters a sense of belonging and presence. Employees start feeling part of the company when they are able to receive their payslips on their mobiles, arrange things with their colleagues on a live spreadsheet or contact each other through Hangouts.
“There was a whole range of reactions but it was primarily a sense of amazement among users when they saw how easy it was to use and the potential for online collaboration”. In just a matter of days, staff were seeing how straightforward it was and how much time it saved.
These changes didn’t only happen among hotel staff. In the offices, employees began to use the tools diligently as well: “We’ve started having meetings on Meet instead of face to face and we collaborate on documents simultaneously and automatically without the need to notify our colleagues, which saves time”.
Until making the decision to switch to the Cloud, GF HOTELS worked with other offline tools, but they were facing a challenge and their former provider was unable to rise to the task – online collaboration. The G Suite tools have made light work of this problem and the possibilities are endless. They’ve seen routine tasks executed in record time and provided their staff with digital identities, a new way of communicating and of working.
Innovation as strategy – Google Cloud
Furthermore, the development possibilities offered by Google Cloud have meant they can continue to innovate with a new G Suite project: “We’re now working on a project which will allow the whole organisation to log in using their G Suite account to access the full range of services available to our staff”. The aim is to convert employees’ G Suite accounts into personalised digital keys – an idea which is entirely feasible thanks to the extensive security structure possessed by Google Cloud and its vast capacity for integration with other external tools.
Now there are new goals. The Google Cloud ecosystem is huge and has an enormous range of possibilities, as many as the ideas you can come up with. That’s why GF TIC (a company based in southern Tenerife, a Nubalia partner and member of the Fedola Group) has set out on a far more ambitious Google Cloud Platform project, which will start by migrating the on-premises software to the cloud. Once this new goal has been achieved, work will begin on the different options offered by Google Cloud such as Compute Engine and Networking.
GF HOTELS aims to lead the way through its use of technology for organisation within the hospitality industry and sustainability in the tourism sector and they trust Google to guide them due to their forward-thinking nature, culture of constant innovation and development: “We want to be at the forefront of the new technologies Google provides in order to set the benchmark in our sector”.
Hospitality – Spain
GF HOTELS decided to innovate within the hotel sector in the Canary Islands using G Suite’s collaboration tools to streamline processes, give hotel staff digital identities and boost productivity.
